CD Burner Just Won't Burn

A friend had lent me a spare CD/DVD burner of his for my build and while it reads discs just fine, burning doesn't work at all. Tried to install again with no luck. Ensure the type of disc to be burned is set at Audio CD -- this is usually the default setting.
Login now. I looked in windows explorer and it showed there were tracks!!! There is no error message, and there are no files on the CD after it is burned. https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/517723/windows-media-player-wont-burn-cds/ The disk will sound like it stops and starts 4 or 5 times then the program will just sit there for awhile, saying it's writing the first track.

I still did not get a fix from Numedia Soft, even though they promised one for Nov 2008. Or maybe the message did appear somewhere in the background? I've tried to use a few Burning softwares like InCD and Burnquick to try to copy my files onto a blank CD-R media but it sometimes froze or doesn't work at http://helpwebmaster.net/cd-burner/cd-burner-mitsumi.html There is also the distinct possibility that your drive is too badly fragmented.

When I click "Burn CD" I get: "CD-R Not Writabl" etc I then inserted ANOTHER BRAND NEW blank cd (CD-RW) that was still shrink wrapped.

Or, could it be my CD Burner? I just tried the cdburnerxp and it burned a 32-bit file just fine, and the CD plays in our oldest CD player, which is the most finicky device that we have.
I haven't tried a DVD in it for awhile but found out that didn't work when the tech at hp told me to try it (honestly that didn't even cross my I ran it on a Pent 4 and it was painfully slow (like a crawl). Look through that listing to be sure you check other items you want to delete (Recycle Bin and Temporary files should be checked). When it comes back up and the desktop is stable, click computer, then Right-Click the C drive again and select "Properties".
