Also have you tried using something other than roxio like alcohol etc.

make sure the drive is selected, burn speed is appropriate, things like that. Several functions may not work. I tried replacing the driver, uninstalled it, tried with CD & DVD, but the drive does not read anything.Though, when I go through the properties of the drive, it says device I havent used that program for a while, so its hard to remember settings...

did you just install the drive recently? All drivers available for download have been scanned by antivirus program.
