As for security, here's my set-up... -Hardware Firewall enabled with no ports opened (most online games work via the routers unp&p detection anyway ;-) ) -Norton AV 2003 installed with auto it's not as bad as "c:\documents and settings" but it's still a bit longwinded.. The format is that of /N with the short name inserted before the long name. On Windows 8 the reboot is not even required any more.
Also, as someone pointed out in a comment to another answer, Windows can be configured not to have the 8.3 legacy names in the filesystem at all.
